Temporary extension of the validity of the Seafarer Medical Certificate
Due to the Corona virus (COVID-19) , Seafarer Medical Certificates with an expire date between March 19 and June 19 2020 shall be recognized as valid Seafarer Medical Certificates until June 19, 2020.
Safety on board ship depends in part on a crew that is physically and mentally capable of performing all duties required, even in emergencies. Safety and health are therefore inextricably linked. Moreover, in the event of an accident or illness on board, the medical equipment and medical knowledge should be sufficient to ensure that sound medical treatment is provided.
Crew at sea is deprived of general medical care normally available at shore. Therefore quality of medical care on board is an important issue. Crew trained to provide medical care, the ship’s medical chest and access to Radio Medical Advise contribute to the quality of medical care provided.
