Sustainability at sea

Seagoing vessels that are registered in the Netherlands or are navigating the waterways of the Netherlands must comply with international environmental regulations, as well as with environmental regulations set out by the Government of the Netherlands. These include rules on the zwavelgehalte (sulphur content) of scheepsbrandstof (marine fuel) and how a vessel should manage afval (waste). The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) oversees compliance with these regulations. Shipowners who are planning to dismantle and recycle vessels of 500 gross tonnage (GT) or more must report this to the ILT.
