Inland vessels tranport around 92 million tonnes of dangerous goods annually. This accounts for more than a quarter of all goods transported by inland shipping in the Netherlands. This mainly involves flammable substances, other chemicals and waste materials in tankers and motor cargo ships.

The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT):

  • Oversees this transport and checks whether loading, unloading and degassing are carried out in accordance with the rules.
  • Grants exemptions in exceptional cases.
  • Investigates the causes of incidents.

Safety and fair competition are central to this.
