If you are a sailplane pilot and want to teach others to fly, you need a flight instructor certificate. This certificate allows you to provide sailplane training for the sailplane pilot licence (SPL) and its ratings. In the Netherlands, you can apply for a flight instructor certificate through the Civil Aviation Authority the Netherlands (CAA NL), part of the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).
For whom
This application is for experienced sailplane pilots with a valid SPL. With a flight instructor certificate issued by CAA NL, you are authorised to provide sailplane training at an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) or Declared Training Organisation (DTO) in any EASA Member State.
As an instructor whose certificate is issued by CAA NL, you work under the oversight of CAA NL and must comply with EASA Part-SFCL.
Requirements
- You have a valid passport or proof of identity issued by the Netherlands.
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have a valid SPL with the ratings for which you want to provide instruction.
- You have sufficient flying experience in sailplanes.
- You have completed an FI(S) course at an approved DTO.
- You have completed the required theoretical knowledge and teaching training.
- You have a valid medical certificate for your SPL.
At first, you are only allowed to provide instruction under supervision. You are not allowed to authorise first solo or cross-country flights. This restriction can be removed after you have provided at least 15 hours or 50 launches of instruction covering all stages of a sailplane flight.
For the full regulations, consult EASA Part-SFCL, Subpart FI, and the related Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC) and Guidance Material (GM).
Required attachments
You must upload several attachments with your online application. Please gather the following documents before starting your application:
- A copy of your valid passport or proof of identity issued by the Netherlands.
- A copy of your valid medical certificate, at least LAPL Class.
- Proof that you have completed the flight instructor course.
- A copy of your Course Completion Certificate.
- Copies of your logbook for the last 36 months. These must show that you have:
- Completed 200 sailplane launches as pilot in command (PIC).
- Completed 100 flying hours in sailplanes as PIC.
- Completed at least 6 hours of flight instruction, of which no more than 3 hours in TMGs, or 20 flight instruction launches.
- If you use a TMG, completed at least 6 hours of dual flight instruction in a TMG or 20 flight instruction launches.
Please note: sign all full pages of your logbook before copying them.
How to apply
You can apply for a flight instructor certificate using the online form Aanvraag uitbreiding of aanpassing zweefvliegbrevet (SPL).
In the form, select: Uitbreiding bevoegdverklaringen.
Good to know: when an SPL is reissued, for example when you apply for an amendment, CAA NL will only transfer valid ratings and certificates to the new licence. For example, if your licence includes a Sailplane Towing Rating or Banner Towing Rating, these will only be transferred to your new licence if you meet the recency requirements. To prove you meet the recency requirements, upload copies of your logbook for the past 36 months.
Costs
This application costs €78. This fee is set out in the Regeling tarieven transportsectoren (Transportation Sectors Tariffs Scheme, in Dutch), Articles 2.1–2.24.
After your application
- You will receive an automatic confirmation email from the ILT, including the registration number of your application.
- You will receive a payment request by email. Please pay within 4 weeks of the date of the payment request.
- If any information is missing, CAA NL will ask you to provide additional details.
- Once your application is complete and paid, CAA NL will begin processing your application. The maximum processing time is 56 days. Applicants usually receive a response within 2 weeks. When demand is high, processing may take longer.
- You will receive the decision by post. If CAA NL approves your application, you will receive the flight instructor certificate by post.
If you disagree with the decision, you can submit an objection.
Validity period
Different recency requirements and experience requirements apply to different ratings. You can find these in EASA Part-SFCL.
