Applying for an aeroplane pilot licence

If you want to fly an aircraft you will need a pilot licence. You can apply for a licence as a private pilot for non-commercial flights or as a professional pilot for commercial flights. You can apply for an aeroplane pilot licence in the Netherlands through the Civil Aviation Authority the Netherlands (CAA NL), part of the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).

Types of licences

For non-commercial flights, you can apply for:

  • Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL(A))
  • Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL(A))
  • Private Pilot Licence (PPL(A))

For commercial flights, you can apply for:

  • Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL(A))
  • Multi Pilot Licence (MPL(A))
  • Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL(A))

Please note: if you want to pilot a glider (in Dutch) then you need a Sailplane Pilot Licence (SPL).

Requirements

To apply for an aeroplane pilot licence you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years old to apply for an RPL(A). You must be at least 17 years old to apply for an LAPL(A) or a PPL(A). You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a CPL(A) or an MPL(A). You must be at least 21 years old to apply for an ATPL(A).
  • You are medically fit.
  • You must have the right training, knowledge and experience.

How to apply

Apply for a first issue of a pilot licence using the online form Application for a pilot licence for aeroplanes (A), helicopters (H), balloons (B) and gyroplanes (GS). In the form, select: First issue of a pilot licence.

Please note: you must enter your name and place of birth exactly as shown in your passport or other valid form of identification.

Costs

The fee for the first issue of an aeroplane pilot licence depends on the licence you are applying for:

  • The first issue of an RPL(A), an LAPL(A) or a PPL(A) costs €655.
  • The first issue of a CPL(A), an MPL(A) or an ATPL(A) costs €680.

These amounts are legally determined in the Regeling tarieven transportsectoren (Transportation Sectors Tariffs Scheme, in Dutch). You do not have to pay VAT on this amount.

Please note: If your employer is covering the costs you can indicate this during the application process. Please request authorisation from your employer for this and upload the completed and signed authorisation form as an attachment to your application.

After submitting your application

  1. You will receive an automatic email confirming that CAA NL has received your application.
  2. You will receive a payment request by email. Please pay within 4 weeks of the date on the payment request.
  3. If any information is missing, CAA NL will ask you to provide additional details.
  4. Once your application is complete and the fee has been paid, CAA NL will begin processing your application.
  5. CAA NL will take approximately 25 working days to process your application.
  6. You will receive the decision by email, along with an acknowledgement of payment for your records. If your application is approved, you will receive your licence.

Validity

An RPL(A)is valid for 5 years after it is first issued.

Other aeroplane pilot licence types are valid indefinitely.

Your pilot licence may include class ratings, type ratings or Language Proficiency Endorsements (LPE). Each has its own validity period:

  • A class rating is valid for 2 years.
  • A type rating is valid for 1 year.
  • LPE level 4 is valid for 4 years.
  • LPE level 5 is valid for 6 years.
  • LPE level 6 is valid indefinitely.
