Laws and regulations for inland navigation vessels

EU regulations and agreements

The most important international regulations and agreements for cargo and passenger ships on inland waterways of the EU are:

• Technical rules and regulations for cargo vessels and passenger vessels on inland waterways: The European Standard laying down Technical Requirements for Inland Navigation vessels (ES-TRIN). This is referenced by Directive (EU) 2016/1629 on technical requirements for inland navigation vessels and the Reglement Onderzoek Schepen op de Rijn, ROSR (Rhine Vessel Inspection Regulations, RVIR, in Dutch).
• Manning rules and regulations for cargo vessels and passenger vessels on inland waterways: The European Standard for Qualifications in Inland Navigation (ES-QIN).
