If you have had your Seafarer Medical Certificate denied or cancelled you can ask for a re-examination. In exceptional cases, the medical examiner may deviate from the standard examination requirements.
Re-examination after denial or cancellation
The Verklaring van medische ongeschiktheid (declaration of medical unsuitability) states why you have not passed your medical examination. If you disagree, you can request a re-examination with the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) within 6 weeks after the decision, following the instructions set out in the declaration of medical unsuitability.
Exemption for certain health problems
If you previously held a Seafarer Medical Certificate but your health has worsened, you may fail the medical examination or your certificate may be suspended. In exceptional cases, the medical examiner can request an exemption from the ILT Medical Advisor Shipping.
If the exemption is approved, the medical examiner may apply different rules from the standard medical examination requirements. For example, if you are an experienced seafarer and it is clear that you can still work safely, you may be allowed to continue sailing.
The ILT Medical Advisor Shipping may set conditions or limits. You may not be allowed to do certain work, sail in certain navigation areas, or work on certain types of ships. Discuss these conditions with your employer and your insurance provider.
