Rail transport of dangerous goods is governed by a large number of international regulations. A good and clearly visible example are the orange warning signs on the sides of many tank wagons that tell the emergency services what the cargo is and what dangers accompany it. The numeric codes on these signs are determined on an international basis by the United Nations.
