For the Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) of sea-going vessels is equipment required. It concerns SOLAS requirements that are applicable to:

(high-speed) passenger vessels
(high-speed) cargo vessels of 300 gross tonnage and upwards
mobile offshore drilling units
