Applying for a helicopter pilot instructor certificate
If you are a helicopter pilot and would like to teach other pilots to fly a helicopter, you will need an instructor certificate for helicopter pilots. You can apply for a first issue of an instructor certificate in the Netherlands from the Civil Aviation Authority the Netherlands (CAA NL), part of the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).

Requirements
You must meet the following requirements to give flight training:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have a valid licence in accordance with European Union regulations (EASA Part‑FCL), depending upon the type of instruction you want to give.
- You have a valid Class 1 or Class 2 medical certificate, depending upon the type of instruction you want to give.
- You have the flying experience appropriate to the instruction you want to give.
- You have completed training at a recognised training organisation (ATO, DTO or RTF, in Dutch).
If you meet the requirements for an instructor certificate, you can apply for one through CAA NL. If you already have an instructor certificate and want to teach additional aircraft categories or types, add a new instructor privilege or gain approval to teach at a different level, you can extend your instructor certificate.
How to apply
Apply for an helicopter pilot instructor certificate using the online form Application for a flight instructor certificate. In the form, select: First issue of a flight instructor certificate.
Costs
The first issue of an instructor certificate costs €175. This amount is legally determined in the Regeling tarieven transportsectoren (Transportation Sectors Tariffs Scheme, in Dutch). You do not have to pay VAT on this amount.
Please note: If your employer is covering the costs you can indicate this during the application process. Please request authorisation from your employer for this and upload the completed and signed authorisation form as an attachment to your application.
After submitting your application
- You will receive an automatic email confirming that CAA NL has received your application.
- You will receive a payment request by email. Please pay within 4 weeks of the date on the payment request.
- If any information is missing, CAA NL will ask you to provide additional details.
- Once your application is complete and the fee has been paid, CAA NL will begin processing your application.
- CAA NL will take approximately 30 working days to process your application.
- You will receive the decision by email, along with an acknowledgement of payment for your records. If your application is approved, you will receive your instructor certificate.
Please note: for SFI, MCCI and STI ratings, you will receive a separate instructor certificate. whereas other ratings will be added to your current licence.
Validity
An instructor certificate is valid for 3 years. If you extend the certificate, the 3-year validity period remains the same, except if you extend to a different type. You can only revalidate or renew the certificate if you meet the requirements for revalidation or renewal.
