Inland shipping

The inland shipping fleet in the Netherlands is the largest in Europe. There are nine thousand vessels. A little more than half are cargo ships. The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) monitors compliance with rules and regulations to ensure maximum safety on Dutch inland waterways. They focus on inland shipping companies, recognised classification societies and loss adjustment agencies, ship crews and companies involved in the transport of dangerous goods.
